American Harvest Organic Spirit is a new style of flavored vodka. While it is made in Idaho by Distilled Resources, it was commissioned by Sidney Frank, who is famous for having created (and later sold) the Grey Goose vodka brand. The brand is owned by American Harvest Distilling. The spirit itself is made from a base of organic wheat and blended down with water from the Rocky Mountains Snake River, which gives rise to the "Snake River USA" on the bottle. The label supports wind energy and offers their bottle in recycled glass.
This is a sweetened vodka. It could potentially be considered a liqueur. The federal Tax and Trade Bureau has classified it with liqueurs but under the heading of "vodka specialties," which deepens the puzzle. For the time being, we have offered to list it as a flavored vodka.
In a generally complimentary review, Drink Spirits noted that "For some, American Harvest is simply going to be too sweet. There's a good deal of sugar in this vodka and the sugary sweetness really defines the core of its flavor profile" but later noted "the sweet notes resemble more natural sweet tones than other flavored vodkas we've tried."
The 2011 Beverage Testing Institute opted to list this spirit as "unflavored vodka" (surprising to us)... they called it "very elegant and flavorful" and recommended it specifically for Martini cocktails.
Sadly, we were informed by Sidney Frank that the product has been discontinued at least as of 2016. If you find a bottle, it might be the last one on earth.
