Description :

Hochstadter's Rock and Rye is Robert Cooper's third release and is a bridge to the 19th century American tradition of adding rock candy to rye whiskey to give it a sweetened flavor. It's based upon a variey of recipes but includes navel orange flavors and sweetened with Pennsylvania honey (which implies to us a kind of Old Fashioned cocktail taste). In a write-up by Fred Minnick for Tasting Panel Magazine (July, 2013) they note that the rye is a 6yr aged rye with a maceration (that is, a good soaking) with lemon, grapefruit, and orange zest with a hint of "horehound" that he describes as a mint-like herb. They suggest serving in a cocktail that calls for 2 parts rock and rye and "2 parts low and slow." We've opted to list this as a flavored whiskey in deference to the high proof and history rather than a liqueur.
