Type : Rum
ABV : 80
Producer : Newfoundland & Labrador Liquor Corp.
Country : Canada
Size : 750ml
Description :

Screech rum appears to be of Jamaican origin but bottled and blended in Newfoundland in Canada. The Screech rum is claimed to be an homage to the "traditional Newfoundland diet" which included Jamaican rum. The name comes from the tradition of serving Newfoundland rum at very high proofs where, during WWII, an American serviceman attempted to toss back a shot like a local and emitted a "bloodcurdling howl." Hence: Screech rum. Today's expression is a much more modest 80 proof.

Tasting Notes :

"In the glass, Screech is a pleasing dark amber, aged for around two years with caramel-coloring added. The nose is somewhat subdued, with leather and tobacco notes, and relatively little of the funky banana esters you’d expect from a young Jamaican rum. The initial entry is caramelized sugar, which gives way to smoke. As with the nose, the Jamaican funk is subdued in comparison to high-ester Jamaicans. The mouthfeel is a bit thin, but also points to no added sugar. The obvious side-by-side comparison is to Coruba Dark-- the Screech is far less funky. Despite its relatively low 80 proof, Screech is a bit rough, making it a better mixer than a fireside sipper."
